Re: Favourite local phrases

Ressurecting this thread after another phone conversation with Erin. This time we were talking about food.
Do you have any names for food other than what they are supposed to called, in your local dialect please.

We have...
Tatties, potatoes
Neeps, turnip
Cubbage, cabbage
Neds, crisps

Re: Favourite local phrases

I love the word 'piece' for sandwich, except I say "a piece and jam" rather than "piece sandwich".

What a great thread!

Most of the scottish ones have been covered. Let me think...

Well there is the traditional Glasweigan 'Buckie', short for 'Buckfast' - the neds drink of choice

Elaine, you're up in the Deen yeh? Dorrich is totally different to Glasweigan. My ex-flatmate's from Aberdeen and she used to imitate it "fit like the noo?" whereas Weegie would be "how y'doin pal?"

Also, a general phrase that Glasweigan's and Scottish West-coasters add onto the end of sentences is 'but', for example:

"I'm just going down to the shops now but".

Makes no gramatical sense, it's just a linguistic habit I've even caught myself saying it a couple of times! Usually after agreeing with someone "aye I know but"

Re: Favourite local phrases

I hate that whole west coast "but" thing at the end of sentences, I'm always waiting for them to say something else after it. Mind you, having said that there are thing in the dorric that I hate too.
Another thing we say for fizzy juice is ale and the west say ginger.
