I believe that pinhole cameras were in use in Vermeer's day - he used one to get everything in place on his canvas (and could be a reason why his canvasses as so small!) Everything was upside down and no print could be taken.

I came across that bit of information somewhere, think it's called camera oscursa or obscura, and may date back to Graeco-Roman times.
