He was a Customs officer responsible for searching ships arriving in port to ensure that no goods are concealed for running as contraband. As all three of you were absolutely on the right track, I'm going to award a point each. I had absolutely no idea what a tide waiter did when I first came across it; nor his superior a Tide Surveyor (who collected the Duty). Q8. What makes “permanent” paper so suitable for archiving purposes? (CM would have known the answer to this one, I'll bet!) |
