Re: Good manners and a little respect

I'd just like to add a positive. Our local farm shop has young Saturday girls on the tills - these girls smile, make eye contact, talk to you like you're a person, say "thank you" and generally make shopping a lot more comfortable experience. They will find things on the shelves for you and if they can't, they will go out to the back to ask the manager for you.

I couldn't ask for better service and I am smiling sitting here typing this - it's made me happy remembering how pleasant the whole experience is when I go there.

Re: Good manners and a little respect

Ah, now this is one thing which does get my goat as anyone can say please and thank you! Actually everyone is always telling me how polite my wee man is because i've drummed it into him from they day he said his first word and as a little brag, he is a very polite boy! But it's when people say it's such a breath of fresh air to hear little ones with good manners, I wonder just what the rest are like as all of my son's friends have lovely manners too, can't fault his teachers for that at all so I wonder just what the other schools in the area teach their pupils?

I always hold doors open e.t.c, I don't think about it TBH it's just how I have been brought up so it's what I do. My nan used to clean and maid for the very wealthy during the war and she's taught us all impeccable manners.

Oh and one more thing! I ALWAYS say thank you when I get off a bus and the amount of drivers who respond is probably about 0.01%!

Random, your post sort of reminded me of what I believe is an old proverb:

"Kind words butter no parsnips."

Me too, Random, and that's customary here, oddly enough with all the other rudeness around...most people do, and most drivers respond with you're welcome and/or have a nice day.....

And speaking of young people: the bus I catch on the way home from the market goes past the local secondary school and is usually full of students. The first 3 seats on either side behind the driver are reserved for seniors/handicapped. Almost 99% of the time when I board one of the kids gets up to let me have a seat!! Nice...

Re: Good manners and a little respect

oh dear u have got me started here,
first on a positive theres a food outlet called spud u like. and the woman who works there is toally charming is always pleased to see you. and will stop n chat with u.
and most of the staff in basildons asdas are great.
BUT its memebers of the public i get cross with. i held the door open for a woman (not of this country) and she just barged in not a word of thankyou. she then alsmost knocked my OH over. and a few others. so i stood just in front of her, and said in a loud voice how rude she was.and then *accidently* bumped into her. she stompted off out.
i will always hold a door open for ppl. must have door man on my head. often feel like holding my hand out waiting for tips.
and they way ppl drive taking your spot that u have waited patientlyfor. taking the disabled bays cause they are popping in for a sandwhich. luckily now asdas around here are now fining ppl who park in either the disabled bays with no blue badge. or in the parent n child bays with no kids.
i could go on for ages.
but one last word.
i always tried to instill into my children, u treat ppl with respect, if u want them to respect you,so then u respect them first.
and please n thankyou are too lovely words which rewards you with a lovely smile.

It is lovely to see children with manners and no not enough parents correct them. I teach all the children I work with manners, or they don't get and I can wait and wait, they soon get the message. Please, Thankyou, and I challenge rudeness, bad manners, disrespect and bullying.

Re: Good manners and a little respect

What rattles my wattle is the freeand easy use of bad language, no wait a minute, FOUL language, by youngsters who speak it as though it were a proper part of speech. The effing and blinding that goes on in their everyday conversation is astonishing, with no regard or respect for other listeners, older people, even their parents.
I have to tolerate foul words said in pain at the height of anxiety, as a midwife I hear it often but I click my ears off. However, when the 'lady' doesn't even offer an apology it makes one think is this the first word her baby will ever hear from its mothers mouth?
Oh Eileen ,you've started me on something now ...
