Re: Handing down names..

Hope we don't ever adopt the US fashion -
Jim-Bob
Jim-Bob junior (his son)
Jim-Bob the third (grandson)

suppose in long-lived families you might even get a 'the fourth' as well?

Lif'es confusing enough, and there are enough names to go round!

I also feel sorry for Greek daughters-in-law. You know the Greek men are like the Italians and are real mummy's boys. It is custom for the eldest daughter to be named after her paternal grandma. So, not only could the DIL hate her husband's mother, but she is constantly reminded because her eldest daughter has the same name.

Re: Handing down names..

Hmmm. Not too many names handed down (to my knowledge). Neither my or my brother's names (first or middle) are descended through the family. but I think my folks found it difficult to compromise with a Polish name that would also work in English (and they chose Yola???? Like that works in English - think 35 years ago ).

I chose Dominik's (not a family name, but chosen by my Aunt), middle name as Alexander. That's my maternal Grandfather's name . . . no one knows what happened to him during/after the war so I thought it a nice reminder for my Mum.

It's this we're agonizing over with naming no.2 at the moment. Names in hubby's family seem to be James (not sure who, but it's keeps cropping up), and Robert - his Dad's name. This is why I'm thinking Rupert as it's a deriviative of Robert (which I'm not too keen on).

Re: Handing down names..

My middle name (Pamela) is after my great aunt who died of cancer shortly before I was born. I have always really liked it because it was meaningful. My mum would have given it to me as a first name but she didn't like it being shortened to 'Pam'.

Otherwise, no names really run in the family on either my side or Neil's. If we ever have a son though, I would like him to have the middle name 'Niles' because it means 'son of Neil' and I think that would be quite special (or I'm very misguided! ). Because middle names are so rarely used I would prefer to give 'meaningful' names even if they are old fashioned or not particularly 'trendy'.

Re: Handing down names..

Erm, not too many names past down here either!

I got my name from my mums nan Imelda Jane, and from my dads mum Martha Jane.
My middle name is Marie, that's just a random name my mum liked! she wanted me to have a Spanish name like maria, but changed it to Marie.

Continuing on with my mums name she got it from her nan Imelda Jane, my mums auntie is called Imelda (Milly) who is the daughter to my mums nan! (Its so very confusing all this).

N that's it i think.

Other names my mum wanted to call me.
If i was a boy: Timothy!!!
Girls names were: Tamara Catherine (I really like the name Tamara, but my dad said NO!)
and Alecia.
There are some more but i cant remember!

My brother is Christopher Geoffrey (named after my dad Geoffrey!)

Re: Handing down names..

all the oldest girls on my fathers side of the family have a middle name of Anne i dont know how far it goes back but its at least 5 or 6 gen it started as Ann but my mother added the e and i stick with the e, there is Lettie Ann, Dilis Ann, Natalie Anne (me) Samantha Anne (my oldest) and then Charlotte Louanne, i didnt give her the louanne middle name to stick with the family as she is not he oldest i just like it. i will tell Sam about the middle name thing if she goes on to have children as i do think its a nice thing to keep going and if she dont have a girl i will tell charlotte

there is a lot of David in my EX family the youngest son of the family is called David so u know when they name a baby David u know no more kids lol
