Re: Lazarus

Ahh right Thought it was probably just a tiny ham, didn't think you would put a massive bowl of deep water for a tiny ham

Syrians hamsters are solitary and will fight to death if living together.
Dwarf hamsters are supposedly social but that doesn't mean they wont fall out with the hammies they live with. Roborovski's (the tiny ones) are the most social towards eachother, then campbells, then winter whites are very likely to fall out but some people have them living together for ages with no problems. Chinese hammies, well, it depends who you ask :P Some people say they're social, other people treat them like syrians.

Re: Lazarus

Interesting, Jane; do they become reasonably social at breeding time? I would assume so, babies aren't found in the cabbage patch!

To breed (well, in captivity, I have no idea how they would do it in the wild) they need to placed in neutral territory then both hamsters are introduced. They need to be supervised very carefully and seperated as soon as it has been done. You need to be ready incase they start fighting too. Syrians come into heat every four days, so it's best to handle the male, then the female so she can smell the male. If she is in heat she will stand. You then know to put them together on neutral territory. It needs to be a clean cage/box/whatever which smells like neither on them because if the female is put into the males cage (or the other way round) they will most likely fight.

Sorry for stealing your thread Elaine

Re: Lazarus

Not a problem Jane

Lazarus is on the mend me thinks. His skin is not tenting as badly as before so he is getting rehydrated. He has had a nible on his baby food and some darius seeds this morning. I also bought him a new cozy wee straw house and a salt stone. He is now all cozy'd up in his bed.
