I think they are worth it Smudgley, I only get the odd hair on the furniture now..

My pic of Cassie's fur shows how much I got from her in 2x 5 mins sessions..

Definitely Smudgley, its brillaint, made a real difference to my hairy cats!

Smudgey, here's a link to a thread I did that covered a report on the FURminator from the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine which answers your question, I think. And did you notice I included a pic of Leia today, very well-furred?
