Re: Fifi paw update

Poor Fifi, Im sure she will be right in the end, if she has an amputation it will cause her no more discomfort.

I'm sorry to hear. I'm sure you will do whatever is needed so she is comfortable and healthy. She's lucky to have you looking after her ((hugs))

Re: Fifi paw update

I'm sorry there isn't better news on Fifi's paw. Amputation doesn't sound very nice but it might be the only course of action to ease her discomfort. I'm sure the senior vet will have her best interests uppermost in his mind.

Re: Fifi paw update

OK - my head is spinning! The vet removed the huge scab on Fi's foot to find an infected wound. Whilst she can't confirm it 100% she feels it is the tumour returning. Fifi has a 2-week antibiotic jab as the wound is now open and of course we're off on holiday (how I wish we weren't).

So - she is going to speak to the oncology specialists in Cambridge. What she told me I pretty much verified myself with a bit of online research: Nerve Sheath Tumours are very rare - they have a habit of reoccuring at the point of trauma, despite surgery, but don't spread beyond the immediate area.

We can do radio therapy - low to mid success rate or we can do chemotherapy; similar prognosis and involves me travelling to Cambridge once a week for 4 weeks with Fifi and involves anasthesia. Oh, and it costs close to £4000

Current thinking is a £800 amputation should remove risk of reoccurance and will give Fifi a degree of comfort again - she's not a happy bunny at the moment.

But I have a meeting with the vet when we get back from hols to decide once and for all, hopefully with all the facts to hand on her part and mine.

Re: Fifi paw update

Wow, I would probably go with the amputation myself. I'm glad she was seen before you leave so she could get that antibiotic shot first! At least she should be settled while you're gone and you have some time to think things over ((hugs))

Re: Fifi paw update

Such a shame, poor Fifi but you are knowledgable and you know that amputee's cope very well.
I hope she remains wel while you are on holiday and that you can also get some R&R. xxx

Re: Fifi paw update

Poor Fifi must have been so uncomfortable with the infection - hopefully the antibiotic will take that down and give her comfort while you are away.

I'd go for the amputation too, all being equal. Good to know that sort of tumour doesn't tend to spread.

Re: Fifi paw update

Poor Fifi, hopefully she'll be quite a bit more comfortable with having some ABs now. I don't envy you having to make a decision on her paw, but the % success rate of the chemo or radio therapy doesn't sound very good unfortunately
