Biting insects - preventatives and remedies

Mosquitoes are VERY bad here; we not only have the regular ones but have been invaded by the Asian Tiger mosquito which is a day flyer!! I went out to fill the bird feeder half an hour ago (took all of 5 minutes) and had 6 bites when I got in!! I am wary of using repellants with DEET, so usually just put up with the bites until I get inside...for years I've been using Cortaid Faststick liquid anti-itch liquid in the little tube like a lipstick...it really stops the awful burning itching quickly. However, it is getting harder to find

Have tried the Benedryl liquid tube also, but it takes longer to work. Saw an article in US News this week about insect repellants and one sounded interesting: Repel Lemon Eucalyptus plant based repellant. The article mentioned that it had been recommended by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) so think I am going to try it. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who apparently taste VERY good to mosquitoes...(stop bathing for the Summer...???

Avoid any scented cosmetics, deodrants, hair spray, perfumes etc as they tend to attract stinging insects........if possible buy unperfumed...

Another tip that helps keep the stingers at bay is to spray lavender water on yourself.......I haven't tried that one out but was told this on holiday once.

Then there is the quick relief one.....dab a drop of vinegar on the sting....

I got bitten in the garden the other day and put Bite Easz (sp?) on the bite and it stopped the itching.

Graham swears by this but says it has to be the green coloured bottle. He uses it when he is in the hills and says all hill walkers/climbers use it as well as the army and special forces.
Citronella has worked for me in the past too.

I'm still using the Lemon Eucalyptus repellant; works as well at the ones with DEET, & I don't like using chemicals like that. Even with no rain to speak of in August the little devils are out in full force biting like mad!!
