If I had to go in for elective surgery I would move heaven and earth to try to give a donation before I went in and have it stored just for me, in case I needed it. I think they don't take if you've had a transfusion just because they know of one past donor who went on to develop CJD. They fear there may be other cases but the chances must be infinitessimally small, as there are only a handful of CJD cases anyway. Sometimes I think we worry too much about the small risks and don't take enough care of the common ones - like insufficient hand-washing in hospitals etc |
