Yes, that's the one CM - clever you recognising it! I haven't been there in years - used to be a favourite haunt of mine especially during the summer as it's just by the river. I am very much afraid it will have turned into a gastro-pub by now. It is now close by the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust centre, so next time I go there .......

I'm going to have to look up the difference between an inn and a pub Eileen! Also when it dates from - there used to be a canal - The Wey and Arun Canal that ran from London via Guildford all the way to Portsmouth that was used mainly to provision the naval dockyards there. It could have been a bargee's pub - there is no main road past it, so it wouldn't have been a coaching inn. I'll see if I can find more info!

I'd just assumed an inn was a place where travellers could get lodging as well as food, a pub for drink/food only. Am I misinformed? Whatever, it looks charming, and liked the historical background.

Thanks for that link. what a delightful place. I'd love to have a meal there, and the walk sounds very nice. Must look up "ramsons", wonder of they are like our wild garlic "ramps"?

I just finished looking them up; they are allium ursinium and our wild ramps are allium triccocum. I learn more things on Catsey! That might have made a tricky quiz Q!
