Not really Donna. Min is quite an old bird so I never thought she would actually break the (beef) bone and be in danger of splintering bits off. We were watching all the time and took it from her after 10 or 20 minutes - whatever.
I think the theory is that you never give any pet animal cooked bones, particularly chicken/poultry.
Someone who feeds raw (? Jeanette) may give be able to give you advice on raw chicken/rabbit etc.
Generally, I would say I have not shown a good example here . Min would say 'Yum'

Re: Summer dreams?

Hi,

Wasnt slagging you off or anything, but just really didnt know if it was safe or not. Was not sure if the bones would splinter or not. Could never feed raw food to them so that wont be an issue. Just that Misty was caught rumaging through a discarded KFC bucket the other day full of bones. She seemed to be enjoying herself but i took it off her cos was not sure if it was dangerous.

Saying that, many a cat has been down my rubbish bags and left chicken bones and old food on my doorstep so maybe they fairly tough!!

I will just continue to give little bits off the bone for them if they give me that sad "i have never been fed" look again

Re: Summer dreams?

Don't worry Donna - def no offence taken. And I think what we should or should not do in an ideal world and what we actually do are sometimes a little bit at variance.
With our very first cat, who was very spoilt, we used to hold chicken bones and he would bite off the ends and really enjoy them. We'd then throw away the length of splintery bone. Not recommended, but no-one came to any harm.

My dogs are fed raw and some of my cats have occasional raw too. Raw meat and bones are perfectly safe but cooked bones should never given to cats or dogs.....

Re: Summer dreams?

it's the cooked bones that are dangerous and can splinter. Almost any raw meat and bone can be fed with safety. Dogs and cats have a different digestive system to man, our cats don't bring us the mice for us to cook do they

Re: Summer dreams?

So why is all the food you can buy for cats, ie., mine eat Felix, all cooked if that is not the "natural" way for a cat?
