Re: Life changing event

Mine could have being when I was diagnosed with breast cancer on the Tues and in hospital by the Thursday then doing a round of Chemo and radiotheraphy.....and then just as it seems a light on the horizon back it comes................... off we go again only no radio this time but herceptain, and to add to it lymphodema.........ho hum you do the best you can. Smile and carry on no point moping around, making others miserable.

But is wasn't my life changing event..mine was when my nephew Jack who will be 15 in Jan, was diagnosed with autisum and learning disabilities, we knew something was wrong but no one really knows what with a 2 year old but watching him grow and progress has been heartwarming and heartbreaking at times.
We were told he would not be toilet trained, rubbish he was using the loo unaided at 4....told he would not speak ....rubbish he was saying words at 5 (okay not complete sentences even now) told he would not walk any distances....which was again rubbish okay he is a lazy soul....but he's a teenager now...and never met one who is full of life all the while.
Jack is happy, loved and healthy what more could anyone want.
He writes birthday and Christmas cards himself, unaided but prompted. He won't be Prime Minister but then again who wants to be..not me, he won't be rushed and takes his time, maybe he won't live unsupported...but he'll never be alone he his Mom Dad, twin and older sister, grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, cousins...who will always be on hand.
He loves his trampoline, playdough...(yukky stuff) colouring and feeding the ducks, swings and making cheese sarnies till you hide the cheese....the knife...the bread anything to stop him
So my life changing moment is the fact that being with Jack you appreciate the people who take a moment to pause. Because you have your eyes opened to the people who care and those who act as if they do. It opens your eyes and your heart loving someone who is less able than others. My life changing event is actually the best thing that ever happened to me Jack is my nephew, and we are all proud of him, he achieves to the best of his ability and what more can anyone ask.

Karen

Re: Life changing event

Oh my goodness, all these stories are so inspiring and beautiful. Whilst some may be a negative experience, they still show the person has come out the other end stronger and shining.

I'm afraid I don't have any life-experiences that are nearly as inspiring or actually life-changing. My first would probably be my parents splitting up when I was 17. My family-life for the previous 5 years had been severly unhappy, strained and stressful making me a very serious and nervous teenager, which I guess i still can be today. Them splitting up was at once hugely sad and also a relief. I still get upset about it now today but it has competley changed my attitude towards the institutione of marriage, the idea of soul-mates, and what 'true love' is.

I've actually had no other major thing that I can think of in my life, but two small minor things that definately changed who I am as a person was being bullied in school, as it made me stronger, and going to University and leaving everyone from school behind. The sense of freedom was amazing.
