Shallots are very simple - just plant a shallot set, rather than an onion one (I do hope the concept and name of onion set crosses the pond). They spread of course, so need a little more space than onions. On the other hand, if you are pressed for space, they can be dual purpose, as you can 'pull' the odd individual young shallot from the clump when they are little and they make substitute spring onions (scallions).
Leeks are one of my favourite - very easy, very forgiving, very reliable and one of the few fresh veg around at this time of year.
