Hmm never thought of that I read once that smell/scent is the sense that rekindles more memories than any other.

I mean even now carbolic soap reminds me of my Nans kitchen and cigars and oranges of Christmas.

Emma - that sounds a bit dodgy!!!

Kazz and PP - you are absolutely right about smells being so evocative. Patchouli takes me straight back to the 70's too! But I am afraid commercial "perfumes" do nothing for me - natural flower and spice scents are best for me.

I love the smell of carbolic soap!! A few years ago we visited the Beamish Open Air Museum (really worth going if you're ever in NE England ) and saw some carbolic soap in the museum shop. OH had to practically drag me away, I could have inhaled it all day

We must resolve never to approach carbolic soap together or we will never leave anywhere
Even the call "Step away from the soap" would fall on deaf ears - that would so be me too I love it.

Would not buy it would "ruin" the memory somehow but the unexpected whiff in most unlikely places is pure heaven.

I love the smell of carbolic soap too - takes me straight back to my childhood. My wonderful mum used to use it on the washing!!! A few years ago we were in a shop in The lake District, they had some carbolic soap for sale and I couldn't be dragged away, so my daughter bought me some!!

I adore candles, have them burning most evenings, and I love natural oils, jasmine, coconut and lavender have to be my favourites. I love a nice warm bath with relaxing music and candles. Oh and lovely clean, crisp sheets - heaven!!

Re: Little luxuries - what are yours?

I'm slightly embarrassed to say I don't know what carbolic soap is .... is it that old fashioned yellow laundry soap in bars that women used in the laundry years ago? If so, I don't remember any particular scent ... but then was rarely around when Mom was doing the laundry as I was in school .....
