Yes you are right about them growing old together my two hae grown old together and now I am facing heartbreaking times almost on top of each other, however I also know on the up side they couldn't have had a better life.
And I am not sure about the limited intelligence idea for forming a strong attachment to a cocker spaniel I know quite a few people who have formed strong attachments to cockers
and they are seemingly intelligent
people.
