Fifi paw update

Given the alternatives, knowing how unhappy she'd be going for the treatments and anaesthesia, I'd opt myself for the amputation. They do cope very well with it, and her constant pain would be gone. I know you'll do what's best for your girl; wish it had never come to this. But at least it's good to know they rarely metastasize.

Does kind of put a damper on the holiday, but do try and get some needed rest, Yola. (((hugs)))

What a dilemma for you Yola. I think having weighed up all you have said, that I would probably go for amputation too. Good luck whatever you decide. xx

I think the amuptation would be my preference over the radiotherphy etc having had it myself I would not wish it on an animal, who did not understand why they felt so bad. Does the vet think the wound would heal well?

However if it were a cat of mine I would also strongly considering the alernative of having my cat PTS. Sometimes even though we can do things through modern science does not mean we should.

I appreciate your reasons Kazz and I agree that it is something that should be thought about but if Yola and the vet think that Fifi's quality of life after amputation (or whatever course she decides is best) would be good then IMO that is the most important criteria for taking that particular path.

Karen, PTS is something that we discussed last night. Both myself and OH were looking at it from the perspective of (a) quality of life and (b) a little more cynically, vet considering their revenue stream.

At the moment we are erring towards amputation, we will decide for certain once we return from holiday and the vet has had her conversations with the specialists.

Apart from her foot, Fifi is perfectly healthy, if the cancer has not spread beyond the immediate vicinity (which initial research shows it is not likely to do, and if it was it will probably already have done so) I would be reluctant to end her life as she may well have several more years of quality time with us - albeit on 3 legs!!

What a dilemma Yola and just before your much needed hols. I know you'll do what's right for you, your budget, and most of all for Fifi. Because she is otherwise well, and the paw has given her so much pain I'd opt for amputation too as it's a localised problem and could give her a better quality of life. However only you know how Fifi would adjust and how acceptable this is for you. Bless you, try to not think about it and the answer may come anyway; give yourself the much needed break.
