Yes it ruins a Borders coat too. Makes them awful, they go lighter and fluffy.

It can be very difficult finding a groomer that will handstrip. When we got Morgan I couldn't find anywhere local, I got told "I do cockers all the time, everyone gets them clipped, it's all too much trouble otherwise, you'll be the same"

I put out a plea on our cocker forum and a member got back to me who shows her dogs, Morgan's been going to her for over 2 years now. She handstrips and scissors only and I do a little bit of stripping of his head too to keep on top of it. It's about an hour's drive from us but so worthwhile, she only charges £20 and Mr H and I go to the local wildfowl centre, have lunch and do some bird-watching while Morgan's having his beauty treatment.

As he's handstripped, his coat lies flat and silky whereas those that are clipped have a softer coat that looks denser and a bit stubby. It eventually becomes very soft and woolly.

I am not an expert on handstripping but I do have to say that I find it quite theraputic to sit quietly and pluck my dog. Painfull on the thumbs after a while and I am improving at it. I also know of a groomer that will handstrip for me but there arent many in Aberdeen that will, time consuming I guess.

"Pluck"?? What exactly is handstripping; are you actually pulling out hairs one by one?

Well yes, although some people will tell you that you are pulling out the "blown" undercoat, the dead hair that has no root. Others seem to disagree!

i have a FURBUSTER a cheaper version of the furminator,even my younger cat who ive never been able to brush,likes it to a point,for about 5 mins at a time
