Re: Neutering info?

My ex's girlfriend had a cat which she never neutered. He was a boy so the problem he created wasnt his (stupid woman).

Anyway he was always out and about doing what unneutered cats do, and one day ventured onto a busy road and was knocked down. Seriously ill, he was caged for around three months whilst his bones healed.

He was finally let out of caging and was on the road to recovery. She didnt stop him going out and didnt still bother with the neutering when he was hit again by a car and this time died.

I am not saying because he want neutered he died, but there is a higher risk involved as they are more likely to wander.

I am glad you are all getting together as a family to get this sorted for your kitty's sake.

Re: Neutering info?

Donna, that's so sad Luckily we live on a very quiet road and as far as we know Patch has never ventured onto that side of the house, we have a massive forest behind our house where he likes to go. I'm not using this as an excuse and yes it is still possible but less likely. We want him done asap don't get me wrong, he will hopefully be done soon. (my stupid brother (who is 17 and is acting like a three year old!) is saying Patch shouldn't be done because it's mean Typical man eh? Have had a talk with my brother and he's finally beginning to understand now.

They lived on a quiet road too. Even a car travelling at 30mph can kill a small animal like a cat.

Good luck with getting it done ASAP.

Re: Neutering info?

Another really big worry about having an un-neutered, un-vaccinated Tom is disease, especially if he's a fighter. He has more chance of being infected with FIV or FELV both of which are life threatening conditions. Many cats with FIV can live reletively good lives but many are PTS. Once the cat is infected it can spread the infection to other cats as the virus is present in the saliva, semen etc.
Now I am not telling you these things to frighten or worry you but these things can and do happen which is again why others may get upset about you having an entire Tom.
There is loads of info on FIV and FELV but dont go worrying, take care of the here and now.
It may be a struggle trying to keep him indoors after the op' so yes try playing with him lots and giving him loads of cuddles.

Cuddles + Patch = no way! Try picking him up when he doesn't want to be and get scratched and bitten to death

Have been talking to my sister and neutering her kitty went fine and he's healed well so yeah. I'm very worried about the possibility of him having FIV or FELV now, if he does that will mean it's our fault, aghh.

Re: Neutering info?

Dont worry too much about these at this time, I mention them because the longer he is left un-neutered and un-vaccinated, the higher the risk because he is a fighter. A friend of mine who does rescue and deals mostly with ferals has not had any test possitive for these but there are a few here such as Smudgley and Charlie who have come into contact with cats that have tested possitive.
If you dont know about these things then its not your fault, its when you know and do nothing that's upsetting and we are ALL learning something new every day.

Re: Neutering info?

Ahh right thank you. We really are trying though, and are going to inquire about a voucher from CPL when we can call them on Monday. Maybe we won the lottery tonight! If we have he'll be booked in by the morning

Re: Neutering info?

I am the neuterting officer for my local CP branch.

Basically the voucher scheme is there to help anyone who is on a low income, or who genuinly can't afford to neuter their cats.

The vouchers give you £20 towards the price of neutering a male & £26 towards the neutering cost of a female.

Some vets do very reasonable rates for people on the "voucher scheme" so that you may only need to pay a few pounds towards it.

You will need to contact your local CP branch.

Re: Neutering info?

Thank you for that Smudgley, that's very helpful.. Would we be able to call the helpline on 08702 099 099 or do I need to find a number for my local place? Will have a look for another number for us to call.

If you ring the national helpline they'll give you the number you need.

Or if you look at cats.org.uk & loot at

find us (green bar on left)

then look at the branches.

Click on the nearest one to you & look at their website if they have one.
