Re: career dilema

How are you feeling today Smudgley? Any more positive?

Your last post indicated that the new job was a home-based one. I think this is quite significant. Working alone, from home, suits some people down to the ground and is absolutely hopeless for others. You would obviously lose your current (good) colleagues and not really pick up a similar network from the new job - more email/phone/visit type relationship. So, that's a big factor to consider when you are weighing things up.

Like all the respondants here, I still think you should apply. You can always go through the whole process and still say 'No' if offered the post eventually. If you don't, you'll always have the 'I wonder' factor, and may end up really regretting letting it slip by.

Take care and remember If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got.

Re: career dilema

Well my current job is "home start" & probably changing to "home based" anyway. basically I start my visits from home & return to home, but don't have an office here. (It means that I don't have to travel an hour into work to start my day) If I go home based, then I will be based at home & have an office at home. We are currently looking into the tax implictions etc of that.

But you are right DM about working alone, although again, my day to day stuff, is currently on the road most of the day visiting people on my own. The CP job would be the same, however I am currently part of a good team - which I guess I wouldn't be with CP, as it would be really on my own.

I can't decide what to do.

I have plenty time to ponder over it.

Re: career dilema

Hi Smudgley
I wandered over here and spotted this thread, hope you don't mind me replying!
I agree with everyone else, that you might as well apply as by doing that you have absolutely nothing to lose, it will also give you more time to ponder...on top of that it is experience in filling in application forms, which will stand you in good stead in the future if something else catches your eye.
I am a great believer in fate. If this is meant to be, it will be, things will just happen at the right time, at the right moment, in the right order, if you see what I mean. Apply, if it's right, the interview will fall on a good day for you, something will happen in Guide Dogs to annoy you enough that if you are offered it you'll take it (nothing major just a niggle perhaps).
The only other thing I would say is that you should look at lifestyle implications. Would you miss doing your CP stuff? Would you still be able to have dogs in the future? You seem to be a dog and cat person and at the moment you are able to be with dogs a great deal and cats a great deal. If you change jobs and work for CP, will that exclude dogs from your life in the future and how much would you miss that? At the moment you are able to have both cats and dogs in a big way. On top of that, will your new job involve a lot of staying away from home? How flexible will that be and what are the implications for your family life?

Perhaps seeing this job wil make you look out for others in the future that you may like more? Perhaps considering it may make you look again at your role in Guide Dogs and reaffirm your enjoyment of your job...or perhaps this job is the one for you? Only you and your family can decide that,I know I for one will miss you! You though have to make a decision based on what is right for you and your family and your lifestyle. JObs are important as they are a big part of our lives, but what we do outside of them is more important!

Hope you don't mind me responding and rambling on. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Ailsa x

Good luck with whatever you decide Kelly.

I agree with the others that putting the application in won't do any harm - then you can take the next steps if and when it comes to it.

Good luck.

lol @ you pair!

No It's just that I went to a regional conference recently & there was a discussion / lecture about the rehoming stats & procedures & some of the criteria that are laid down by some branches that are unacceptable & unnec.
