i hope the news is better than you think when the vet calls you Jane...i dont want to give you false hope.... but it could be something as simple as him not wanting to eat has caused some problems with his liver
when cats dont eat their livers produce an enzyme which damages it...and it creates a condition called feline hepatic lipidosis... and its makes the cat feel unwell and not want to eat... which just makes the problem worse...
so if he hasn't been eating because he's been feeling unwell for a period of time... it can cause problems with the liver... it might be something as simple as putting him on appetite stimulants to make him eat but your vet will have a better idea after they have had him on the drip and evaluated him...
obviously if your vet tells you it's time then that's what has to be done... but dont write him off yet...

He is still on a drip and they are doing more blood test today. I have got to phone back at three and they might know more then
