Re: Superstitions

Cows lying down in a field - it is going to rain

When your ears burn it indicates someone is talking about you:
Left = lust/love
Right = envy

Re: Superstitions

If you see the first star of the night (i.e. the only star in the sky), you are meant to make a wish and it will come true. I have actually done this as a child and it came true!

Also, make a wish on a shooting star and it will come true.

I recognise most of the ones already mentioned but I'm not at all superstitious, however I always greet Mr Magpie!
I love that one, MrsH! never heard of it When I was in grade school (Catholic school) the nuns taught us always to say "miserere nobis" whenever we heard an ambulance ........I do to this day .....

When there has been a birth or death in the house, you should always tell the bees....(those of us who live without beehives are in trouble...)

Never kept bees myself either but I've always been familiar with this one. I was very surprised a short time ago to discover my husband had never heard of it. We'd been watching a costume drama on TV where an old woman rushed out of the house, brushed past the neighbours and hurried to tell the bees that her husband had died. OH looked a bit blank and asked me why she'd done that.

I heard somewhere that this one goes back to WW1. By the time a third cigarette had been lit, the soldiers in the opposite trench had time to take aim and fire.

That's what my Dad told me, MrsH, and while he was in the Army but didn't serve "over there" his buddies did...
