If you found english notes in your attic Eileen, they would have to go to the bank. If you found scottish ones, they could be used, although the english are very funny about accepting scottish notes at all. The amount of times I have almost got into fights with shopkeepers refusing my money |

Scottish lass here - Yes we do still have paper £1 notes but they are seen very seldom and are pretty tatty. Few years ago I was visiting my friend in Kent (SE of England) I offered to go get some shopping in a large well known supermarket and when I went to pay they would not take my Scottish notes. On principal, even though I had my 'plastic' I ended up leaving about £40 quids worth of shopping, that had been put thru' the till. Bet that took a while to put back. Went into the wee local shop and they didn't even blink! Didn't have any problems at all though when I was in London in October, noone looked twice at them. |

There is a notice on the Bank of England's website saying that they will change any money that used to be legal tender during their opening hours. So even if your local branch won't take some of the older notes, the BoE will. Mind you, you'd have to travel to London first. |
