I bought a digitally remastered download the other day - I am not an expert, but some parts seem to go quieter as I presume spikes are "ironed out". I don't know much about it either, but I do know the original of this particular album very well otherwise I'd probably not notice.

If it is a track I know and love then I tend not to like it. If it is one I didn't know then probably not as biased.

I think there are some of the classics which, because they can be played by many different orchestras, sound 'cleaner'.

I am not sure whether "oldies" were badly recorded at the time and can't be played on modern digital players sufficiently well. I haven't actually looked to see if I can find an explanation that isn't too complicated!
