Well, I have just handed my notice in at work and it didn't go at all as planned. She has asked me to stay longer than the 2 months I have to give. I said that I could be flexible a little bit and stay an extra couple of weeks, but she wants me to stay another nearly two months until the end of September to cover holidays etc. She has also said that she wants me to find my own replacement. I'm really shocked and don't think I dealt with it very well, I just kinda mumbled that I would see what I could do. Whilst I want to be fair and don't want to leave on bad terms I do feel this is taking the p*** a little bit I don't dare speak to my new employer yet - I really don't think they will accept me starting any later How do I get myself in these positions!?!?!??! |

Oh Charlie at the end of the day you have do do what is right for you and personally I wouldn't jeopardise your new job just because your current employer is being awkward. You only have to work what is in your contract, I wouldn't want to leave on bad terms but they are taking the p*** I think |

I think I'm going to have to tell her that my new employer won't allow me to start any later and she will just have to deal with it. I only have to do what it says in my contract - I was only trying to be nice and it has backfired!!! |

I agree with Fran, Charlie, if your contract says 2 months then 2 months it is....not a day, a week or a month over... Also I can't see that it's your place to find your own replacement! Your new job definately takes priority, you work what your contract says and don't risk losing this chance.... |

You haven't got 'Welcome' stamped over your forehead CB? Thought not - so you're not a doormat. Trouble is, if you act like one people will walk all over you and your current boss seems to be doing that in spades. I'd write it down tonight and just hand it to her tomorrow. Like Dear x. Following our conversation yesterday i would like to give you this formal confirmation of my intention to leave on xxx (two months time, in accordance with my contract). I will be due x days leave between now and then and [either will take them at the end of my notice period, meaning that my last day at work will be xxx or will discuss with you when I will take them or (if it suits you) am willing to take salary in lieu. y/s Good luck |

Okay, I've been strong...........kind of!!! I have written a formal letter along the lines of DM's and gave it to her yesterday. I have said that I hereby give 2 months notice as per my contract, but that as a gesture of goodwill I would be prepared to stay until 24th August 2007 at the latest. Then I can have a week at home (my new house!!) before starting my new job on 3rd September - which they have agreed to. I'm very relieved!!!! Plus - if I can find a replacement sooner then I can leave sooner. Thanks for all your help ladies. |
