Yes, my dictionary has the etymological origin as being "O.Fr - L.L. hospitale - hospes, -itis, a guest." also something about the Knights of St. John (otherwise called Knights of Rhodes and afterwards of Malta)!!! So there is the connection with the Knights Templar too.

That's one thing I love about words.... there can be history in them.....

One reason English is so rich in synonyms and other words...we've taken words from Latin, Greek, French, German, Saxon, Danish, Hindi, Chinese and so many others. Do you ever read the dictionary? Often when I'm looking something up I end up reading other entrys that catch my eye.....

Yes, dandysmom I do read the dictionary - it's fascinating. We've recently had a TV programme here about how words get into the OED - it's always been the case that people have been able to send printed references in on certain words when sections of the dictionary have been in revision. The whole story of gathering words together is wonderful! (At least IMO!!!)
