It is a large number of rats which get joined together when their tails all stick due to dirt or pooh or rotton food etc. There is a mummy of one in a museum somewhere I believe. Yuk |

Steph and CM are right. I'll post my answer, but CM's reply has got the gist of it anyway. Not absolutely sure that it's not a fable. There seem to be quite a few photos! "Rat kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, excrement or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails." As you say, YUK - how the poor things don't go mad I don't know. Q7. What is a Tarte Tatin?
