Looking really good. The raised beds are the only way to go really, aren't they? (unless one particularly enjoys double-digging every autumn of course!) And eating the fruits (and veggies) of your labours makes it all worthwhile |

Woo hoo, looking great! How I wish I had the space and energy for such a large plot! But I do enjoy my little back yard vegetable bed ...have flowers on the hot peppers now, as well as a few tomatoes. You'll be eating well this season, Yola! |

I'm a very orderly person and the raised beds give me defined areas where I know plants go and it means I can also plan rotation effectively. Yes, the wood is pricey and they're a bit time-consuming to make up but very much worth it. We have so many weeds (horse tail I think OH said), which has horrid elastic roots that go down for miles and are SO difficult to dig out. I shall be double-digging for years to come I fear in order to remove these  I have to say I'm amazed at how well everything has grown, mind you it's all been doused in manure so the soil is very rich and fertile - and being quite loamy it's good soil to start with. I'm very much looking forward to harvest time . . . I'm just hoping and praying my brother bothers to water the allotment whilst we're on holiday in August! |

Hmm - I think most people are very busy establishing their own plots and fighting bugs, vermin et all to do very much to help. I might have a chat with the chap on the allotment-but-one who uses a hose to water his plot (not strictly allowed) to see if he might help. I'll possibly also invest in a hose myself for the 2 weeks to make it easier for others (including brother) to keep things alive! |

There's a strong school of thought that, by August, the plants should have their roots down far enough to pull up their own water from down below. Watering a) makes them 'soft' b)encourages weed seeds to germinate. Apart from newly transplanted lettuce etc they ought to stand on their own one stem! |
