Handing down names..

After a discussion with my g-gran today on handing down names i thought i would see if any of you lot were named after arelative..and what you thought of the practise of passing down names?
In my family theres a fair few..there was g-g-g-gran avril..then g-g-aunty avril (now departed) named after her gran..and one of my great aunts (grandfathers sister, lives over in africa) was named avril, after her g-g grandmother and aunt..Confusing i know.
then we have lots of Daves and Tonys in my family..these are the only immediate ones that spring to mind.
Personally i think its a nice 'thought' but jesus christ its confusing at times! Also i think some names seem to 'date' at times..i know when i was born, two prospective names for me were Dennis n Walter, which i don't think i would have like to be named all that much..
So..were you named after a relative?
And what are your thoughts on 'handing down names'?

Re: Handing down names..

My second name is Mary, it was my g-grandmother's name, my Gran's, my Mum's, now mine and also my granddaughter's - didn't have a daughter of my own to pass it on to so it did miss a generation. Have been researching my ancestors and Mary was a popular name throughout the whole lot of the family. One thing that is confusing though is that in the days of a high death rate among babies and small children one child called e.g. Robert might die and the next male born would also be named Robert. It seems that back 100 years or more they did like to keep the same names in the family. It can make the research more than a little confusing Logoes

Re: Handing down names..

My mother's mother was called Emma, and I have called my daughter Emma. More because I liked the name than anything else; but my mum was over the moon when she found out what name I had chosen. She lost her mum when she was young, and I think it pleased her that her name would still be in the family.

Re: Handing down names..

Well My Mom's Mom was called Emily Rose, her mother was Rose, my Mom is called Margaret Rose (also she was born the same year as Princess Margaret ) I am Karen Maragret and My niece is Sophie Rose, so Rose has made it through,

On the male side my Mom's lot no names handed down. On my Dad's side his Dad's name was Frank (but know as Pip for some reason ), his eldest son was Frank, his son Franicis, his son Frankie.

Also the name Robert is common also Michael. But none handed down as such, I have 5 Roberts as 1st cousins, at least 3 as 2nd cousins and lord knows how many 3rd cousins plus.
Michael's I have 1 brother, 4 x 1st cousins, 7 x 2nd cousins and again Lord knows how many 3rd cousins named Michael.

I went out with a chap whose names were handed down Edmund James, he was the 6th to be named Edmund they moved generations, it went Edmund James, James Edmund, Edmund James, James Edmund, Edmund James, and his son is now called James Edmund. So 7th generation. I know you think thats only 6 generations but in between 2 and 3 there was only a daughter, and she was called Elleanor Jane That was Eddie's Nan a lovely woman.

I am Frances Mary. My Father was Thomas Francis and my mother's middle name is Mary...Tom my son is also Thomas Francis (same as my dad). Em is Emily Kate, my sister is Katy (Katherine) Geraldine

Incidently, Em was born on my dad's birthday - a lovely rememberance for us as he has been dead quite a few years now

Re: Handing down names..

Eileen is the Irish version of Helen; both my Mom & Dad had a sister Helen; Katherine, my middle name is for my paternal grandmother. My Dad's name was Howard, which was his mother's maiden name. I like the idea of keeping names in the family. And yes, if I were a guy I'd prefer not to be named Walter!

Re: Handing down names..

My middle name has passed down through the family-tree, as a middle name. Quite like that. Grand-parents first names are often grandchildrens second name as well. Ties us back into the family, is how it feels to me.

Re: Handing down names..

No names as such handed down. Hubby's side of the family all of them have a middle name begining with 'J'

Louise was named after my grandmother and Thomas was named after my grandfather. Couldn't think of a middle name for Louise so we were spelt the letter 'J' Jaye and Thomas middle name is Jacob. As soon as we had decided on Thomas, Jacob just rolled off the tongue with it.
