National anthem

Based on the posts asking for us to "post more" this is my contribution

Do you have a favourite national anthem, or indeed a non favourite national anthem?

I dont really have a favourite nor a non favourite tbh. But I do wish who ever makes these thing up, that they'd make them a little more up beat and less depressing on the ears

Re: National anthem

I quite like The Italian National Anthem! I only know it due to the fact that my brother is married to an Italian girl and lives in Italy..

It is far livelier than our Anthem!

Re: National anthem

Well, I suppose I'm prejudiced but I love ours, even tho the high notes are hard to reach...I get goosebumps when it's played! Yours is stirring, and so is France's; those are really the only ones I know aside from ours. I've heard other ones at the Olympics but honestly couldn't tell one from the other if I heard them a week later .....

Re: National anthem

I'm not really a great one for patriotic songs etc, but I have to admit I am always really moved by the Polish national anthem; especially when the country was still under Soviet occupation, it was something my Dad often used to hum absentmindedly when deep in thought. Loosely translated, the opening line was 'Poland has not yet died, not as long as we are alive'.

Re: National anthem

I'm not keen on our National Anthem tbh, but I do love some of the patriotic songs such as those heard at the last night of the proms. Rousing stuff!

Re: National anthem

Hate ours - it's a dirge.
Love the Italian anthem - my OH has it as a ringtone!
Here'sa link but it's usually played much faster than here

Re: National anthem

Not that I am biased but Mae Hen wlad fy Nhadau, the Welsh one, does make me feel emotional and sung in a crowded Millenium stadium it makes the hairs on the back of your head stand up too!

Yola, I recently read James Michener's "Poland" and enjoyed it immensely...learned a lot of the incredible history and the uncrushable spirit of the Polish people...

Re: National anthem

Can never help thinking about the Billy Connolly sketch when people discuss national anthems (esp English). First time I heard the sketch, I have to admit I nearly wet myself ....... you know how it goes "rumpty tumpty tumpty tum rumpty tumpty tum tum .........." (sung with gusto to the tune of "The Archers" - for you young 'uns!)
