Cat pooing on floorMy 19 year old cat has started to poo in the house. She doesn't do it often, once every 1 to 4 weeks. The vet has given her a clean bill of health, she is really amazing for her and and not at all stiff. The last 2 times she has done it is when we have both had to work long days and have been out of the house from 7am until 10pm. My husband thinks she may be pissed off with us for being out so long and doing it to spite us, but I am not sure cats think like that. We have put a feliway diffuser in the house but that hasn't made a difference. Her litter tray is emptied regularly, with a litter she likes and in the same place as always. She uses it fine the rest of the time. She isn't having her "accidents" in the same place, or on the same type of surface, each time. We used to have 2 cats, but she started this behaviour a while before the other cat died. I won'der if she doesn't like the litter we use (clay granules), but that wouldn't explain why she does it infrequently and we have been using that litter for many years. What can I do/try now? I have to sort this problem out soon as next month we have another cat arriving.

Hi and welcome. Do you think she could maybe be going senile? It does happen. There's a thread about it way back. I'll see if I can find it for you. The other thing if it's happening when your away all day. Why not put some rescue remedy in her water the night before you know the house is going to be empty all day. Just a thought. |

Thanks Jac. Senility is something that has occured to me as she always used to be so clean, but my vet said cats don't go senile. Not sure I believe the vet mind you! I am hoping I can get the the bottom of the problem before we get another cat - I know it may not be ideal to introduce another cat now but we have had mice in the house and clearly need a mouser!! (the problem started before the mice moved in so while she is not a good mouser she isn't scared of the mice!). |

Cats can go senile and these little occasional accidents she is having are a sign of it. At her good age it is very much a possibility. If it is then you will just have to bear with her. Is there a different vet at the practice you could see to get another opinion? Despite what some of them think they don't know everything. |
