Amputation right front leg hi everyonei need some advice abought my 12 year old russion blue cat that is coming home tomoroe from the hospital. she had her right leg amputated 3 days ago 12/23/1o she had a tumor. what should i watch for is there any special needs i need to know like litter box. stairs are ramps. other health issues that may happen because of her leg amputation. diet

Cats cope really well with three legs, so I wouldn't worry too much. I haven't owned an amputee personally but there are plenty of members on here who have had amputees, so one should be along shortly to answer any questions you have regarding the amputation  |

Hello Tracy, welcome to Catsey. I don't have an amputee . . . yet . . . but I too have an older cat with a tumour on her front paw and am VERY uncertain as to how to progress. I would be very interested to hear about how your cat copes both initially in terms of balance and also how the operation and recovery affects her character (if at all). |

We had an amputee, Triger. He coped very well, the first thing to do is make sure you get some pain relief home with you. Triger's wound was very swollen and I was quite shocked by it, we kept him quiet in one room for the first 2 weeks, until his stitches came out. He adapted very quickly. Our neighbour has a front leg amputee and he copes very well too, as does a foster cat we look after during holiday times. The only problem with those 2 are that they are overweight and this is not a good thing especially with 3 legs- so keep an eye on her weight long term. |

I've never had an amputee, but those that have all say cats cope amazingly well. Good tips about the pain killers and the weight. I'm sure your vet will probably brief you on what to expect; hope all goes well for you. |

my neighbours cat, tweetypie had her back leg amputated when she was about 4, she went on to have a long happy life with her owners. It never caused her any problems. |

Hello Tracey, I'm sorry to hear Mama has had to have a leg amputated. You must be so worried and still in shock from her operation. Several of our members have been through what you are going through right now, with their own cats.
