Ninja has a broken heart
Hi all, I wish I could come and post a happy update with lots of cute pics of Ninja at 6 months old, but alas, I have sad news.
A few weeks ago, I noticed Ninja would pant after playing. I didn't think too much of it at first, as I thought maybe I had just worn him out. But then He started panting for longer and longer, with less and less stimulation. Worried, I called my vet. On x-ray, his heart looked a bit odd. He had a cardiac Echo done at the specialist on Wednesday and was diagnosed with Dilated cardiomyopathy.
This used to be really common in cats before they started adding taurine to commercial diets. Its unheard of in kittens. The current thinking is, that he lacks the ability to process the taurine and make it usable. This is the only way to explain why at 6 months, his heart looks as bad as it does. He's never had appropriate levels of taurine in his system. We've sent off a Taurine level check which should tell us if this is the case. It takes two weeks! Longest 2 weeks of my life!
The other option is that it is Idiopathic DCM (no known cause) in which case he has weeks or months to live.
Actually, in either case, he has weeks or months.
I'm completely heartbroken. I'm trying not to let it ruin the time I have left with him. He's a precious angel, and I don't regret a moment of the past 6 months. He really is a special cat. I don't know how to explain it except that he just has so much character, even before his eyes were open, I knew he was special. I had hoped to spend a good many years together.
But it looks like God has other plans for my little Ninja.
