My dear Bernie

Bernie has leukemia, he has a large mass in his upper abdomen. My vet reckons that at best he has 3 months.
We have decided not to go for treatment on this occasion as there is not a good success rate with this type of leukemia. We could have some invasive surgery done but this will only confirm the diagnosis and will then be kinder not to wake him up from surgery, so we wont be doing that either. We may have an ultrasound done, but again this is only to confirm the diagnosis.
He is not in any pain or discomfort at this time but my vet feels that this may be short lived and he may rapidly go down hill. We may try some meds but will just have to wait and assess this against quality of life.
I am absolutely gutted, this was not the diagnosis I had expected.

Re: My dear Bernie

Oh Elaine, I am so sorry to hear this diagnosis. I know that you will do all you can to make the most of what time you have with Bernie and to ensure that he suffers no pain.

It's an awful thing to come to terms with, but I know you will for his sake. Be strong love, you know we are here for you as needed. ((((HUGS))))

Re: My dear Bernie

Thanx every one. Have read a few articles on the condition, contacted a very dear and knowledgable friend, you know what I'm like..... I have to know all I can.
Thinking I should try to cancel some of house sitting work so I can be with him. G is very good with the animals but he fails to notice the things that I see and I dont want my boy to suffer.

Be with him. I think you will feel worse if you don't. Make the little time you have as perfect as possible so you have those golden days to remember when it is time for him to move on and you need the strength. I wish I didn't have a good idea of how you feel but I do and I'm so sorry you have to say goodbye. (((HUG)))
