Update on Bagera...

Well unfortunately after sitting down and looking at our finances, I have finally accepted the fact that it would not be suitable for me to rehome Bagera at the moment. If I were able to insure him against his urinary problems I would be fine, but seeing as that is not going to be possible - what with my private healthcare bills for my knee, taking Zayanaah back in a few months time when she will be in foal, and with work and college aswell, I would hate to take the poor lad and then find that I couldn't cope.

It's heartbreaking for me as I am really unsure as to whether or not he will get his forever home. With the problems that he has currently, and the potential for progressive problems in the future, many people are likely to just walk on by

however, I know that if he never gets his forever home, our cat rescue will keep him for the rest of his days in their purpose built home/surrounding grounds for all of their resident cats.

On Friday evening, we were really struggling the catheterise him. He is still unable to urinate of his own accord, and so was having to be catheterised twice daily to empty his bladder. Because of the trauma that he has received in that area, he is just so so sore, so we decided to insert what is called a 'Foley Catheter'. This is a catheter which is placed inside the bladder and inflated, so the urine collects in the catheter rather than the bladder itself. The tubing is then passed out through a hole in the cats side, and a urine collection bag is attached, so the bladder is draining constantly with no trauma to the urethra.
So on Friday the little man underwent surgery again to place the catheter inside him. He coped surprisingly well with the anaesthetic and he still has the urine bag attatched at the moment. If he is unable to urinate by himself come tomorrow, he will have to undergo more surgery.

Despite everything he seems quite happy, apart from the odd grumble when we try to move his bed around to clean it

we have established that he doesn't like Isobel

so no socialising there! We tried - we failed miserably

I will keep you all updated with his progress and let you know how he gets on

Aww thats a shame but at least you know that Bagera will have a safe haven should no body want to take on this poor babe.

Thanks for your lovely thoughts everyone. He's a tough little cookie but I just feel so sorry for him. He's having lots of cuddles with his Auntie Hayley at the minute though so he's being thoroughly spoilt

He's lost weight since being with us aswell, from 6.3kg he is now 5.8kg. Not too great as he has lost a fair amount quite quickly, but with the surgery he has undergone, the pain he has been in and not eating properly for the first 4 days it's not surprising! We had to syringe feed him to start just to get some food into him! However he does need to lose weight anyway so it's not too much of a bad thing - just needs monitoring.

I wish I would start spelling his name properly aswell

It's actually Bagheera but I'm being lazy and saying Bagera

Poor brave boy! I'm sending healing vibes also, and hope all works out for the best for him! I love his name, Bagheera was always one of my favorite characters in The Jungle Book.....keep us posted on how he's doing, please.....

I hope some kind person will come along and give him their heart and their home .........he has been such a brave boy.

Poor cat.

Can I put on my tin hat, put my head above the parapet and wonder aloud if it might not be better for him to be gently pts. All he knows now is pain - he can't rationalise and think 'it'll be worth it in the end' and there's not even the prospect of him returning to the surroundings and loving owners he has known to put in the balance against his current suffering.
I know it's difficult, and I'm not saying he should be pts. Just saying, you know, life isn't everything.
