Unidentified plant!

This is the plant that I mentioned in Eileen's thread yesterday.

I have "The Wild Flowers of Britain and Northern Europe" by Richard and Alastair Fitter and Marjorie Blamey and can find nothing really close enough to say that's it. The nearest I can get is a wintergreen, but it's growing at the wrong time of the year and in the wrong sort of area - ie. a shady site in my garden rather than in a rocky place on the side of a mountain and the leaves aren't quite right anyway!! It has the strangest little flowers too, when they open there's not really any "proper" sort of flower!

Please ignore the ash seedling that's coming up through it - that's just got to be pulled up PDQ!

Any ideas?

Re: Unidentified plant!

I think you're right, the leaves are wrong for wintergreen.

I can't find anything like it in my wildflower book either, but I thought the leaves looked a bit geranium/cranesbill like. It might be a hybrid of something you've planted (?) I looked in my gardening books and there seems to be some similarity with Heucherella ( a cross between Heuchera and Tiarella) There's mention of them spreading easily but the picture I have shows slightly denser and pinker flowers. Not much help is it? - sorry!

I looked thru my wildflower book also, and hesitated at wintergreen, but said nah; not it. Also wondered about tiarella, the leaves on yours look somewhat maple shaped.
Saxifrages..??

Re: Unidentified plant!

Thanks for trying - I can see what you mean about the heuchera shaped leaves and I wonder about the hybrid ...... your interest has encouraged me to try and hunt further and it helps having the photos now too!

Re: Unidentified plant!

I didn't realize that the heucheras were in the saxifrage family until I did a bit more reading...think it's somewhere in there that your mystery plant fits .....

Re: Unidentified plant!

Think we (well, OH really) has found the plant! It is a Tellima grandiflora which is a member of the Saxifrage family and otherwise known as a "fringe cup". Originally from North America, it has escaped!!! You can buy the plant from Crocus if you're interested. Sad really, I wondered if I might have an undiscovered hybrid and I could have made a fortune!!!

Thanks peeps for your help!

The unidentified plant is now IDENTIFIED! Hooray!!!
