Macedonia

I went to Macedonia this year for a fortnight. Usually go to a little Turkish village but fancied a change and saw that Macedonia had just opened its airport a year earlier, after 15 years of being cut off from the rest of the world and having all kinds of internal strife.

Brilliant! Landscape is breathtaking, Lake Ohrid superb, climate perfect, with temperatures of 26-30C, mornings cool enough to be active, pleasant evenings and nights cool enough to sleep well. And no - absolutely no chav tourists!

Had a week in a really excellent hotel in the town of Ohrid, then moved on to another hotel 7km away. The setting was beautiful but the hotel was abominable, LOL! It suffered from a Communist hang-over: indifferent management, grotty bathroom, terrible service and the food was unspeakable: like 1950s school dinners or British hospital food. I threw a frightful tantrum when they served me the same rotten food for 4 days in a row!

You can eat out in town for very little: 1.50 euros gets you a good lunch (chicken fillet kebab, chips, salad, or a truly mountainous Greek salad containing about half a pound of sheep's cheese). A more elaborate 3 course dinner with drinks will cost you around 5-8 euros.

Now I know where to stay and where not to stay, I'm going back next summer with my daughter.

I'll stick some photos here when I have more time.

Re: Macedonia

The lake is 30km long, great for swimming. Most of the tourists are Macedonians or Greeks or people from other Baltic countries. I'm planning to enjoy this little jewel until the inevitable day when Thompson's and Neckermann tour operators discover it and ruin it forever.

Oh, and no midges, which is great! Lol
