Lokrum Island - Croatia

Lokrum Island is a nature park with exotic tropical and subtropical plants and a unique botanical garden which is still being worked on. There are no vehicles on the island so it's like a peaceful haven...... It is criss-crossed by shady tracks overhung by palms and pine trees.

The island is said to be where Richard the Lionheart became shipwrecked on his route home from the Crusades in 1190.

Lockrum has families of high pitched screeching peacocks inhabiting the island, also tortoises are wandering freely throughout, so you have to keep your eyes on the ground as it would be so easy to step on one.

Approaching Lokrum by boat ....

Shaded paths among the pine trees....

The sound of the peacocks could be heard all around the island ...

The peahens stayed on the ground, most were guarding their young, which we called 'pea-lings'

The young pea-lings!

We had to watch where we walked as tortoises were almost underfoot!

The Botanical Garden had a wonderful display of palms, cacti etc.....

I wish we could have made more visits to this island, it was so relaxing!

What a gorgeous island, thanks for showing us. I've never seen a pea-ling before and can't imagine what it would be like trying to avoid treading on a Tortoise

That plant looks like a Callistemon - a bottlebrush, but I don't know if the white plant of Mags' photo is one, as I thought they were crimson!!!

Btw - I believed in "pea-lings"!!!

That looks like a little bit of Paradise! Imagine, a place without cars or motorcycles, just nature's sounds .... including the peafowl! They are simply gorgeous, I've never seen the chicks either. I think I could gladly spend several days there: so beautiful, so much to see. Didn't know about Richard's shipwreck, that is, I knew he was shipwrecked, but not there!

It really is a beautiful island, so peaceful other than the sound of the peacocks ...... you would love it Eileen except for the fact they have some vicious mosquitoes
there - I was badly bitten on my leg and had blisters come up the size of small plums . I needed medical treatment for them when we arrived home!
