Tree for copicing

Has anyone any idea on which tree is best for copicing.....ie not letting it grown straight up but cutting down so it throw out more branches and better for wild life??? I imagine Hazel but not sure....

Re: Tree for copicing

And I can tell you from personal experience that elms do it...had two small ones that had come up in the front yard where they weren't wanted cut down three years ago, and the small stumps are still sending up shoots!!!

I'd have said hazel too Kazz. You might even get some cob nuts out of it. I'm always wary of willow for a smaller garden ... they are a bit rampant!
