31 hours without electricity...

It just came back on at 2 this morning... After going off at around seven Thursday evening.

On Thursday we had storms with reported winds of up to 180mph. It was a hellish day (walking in it was horrible, sometimes you couldn't stop moving, sometimes you'd be walking but barely making any progress) and the winds caused a number of faults.

Well on Friday the estate behind our house, and the people 20 metres or so up the road, got their power back... But we didn't. We left a light on in the bedroom so we woke up when it came back on for us, and then Hippie went downstairs and cooked us something hot.

We've lost 2 freezers' worth of food, a fridge about 1/3rd of the way full, and my health has gone downhill a tremendous amount due to the cold.

We did what we could to keep the kittens warm - Sashimi got hungrier as we obviously couldn't maintain our normal 20-degree temperature, so we fed her more than usual - and they're fine. They're now out practically all the time, wreaking havoc and playing like mad. I worried myself half-sick about them, but there you go, they're fine.

Unfortunately this has happened to us before (when they put in a new gas mains I was without heat for about 12 hours at a time, twice) and I've never fully recovered - now that it's been thrice that long I am in a massive amount of pain and I expect it'll be a very long time before I recover But the main thing is everyone's all right, and we've finally had hot showers!!

Oh Snoof - I am sorry to hear this, but relieved that power is restored now.
You must get yourself an alternative heat source. Look on ebay or summat for one of those bottled gas heaters and keep one room warm. You can get little compact canister gas rings for cooking for about £12 now, so get one of those as well.
Edit
Even better - get a new one like this for £70. Look after your health!

Re: 31 hours without electricity...

We've decided to organise a disaster cupboard, DM, so we definitely will. It's nuts, but since school let in we've been without heating three times, and we're both at a loss for what to say to United Utilities! We understand they couldn't help the fault occurring, but when they restored the rest of town except for our little block of people and then removed our town from their automated voicemail (which originally said we'd get power back by 5pm yesterday) we both really lost all understanding for the situation they were in.

Luckily for us, we do have a gas fire in the lounge, but the extreme differences in temperature this caused in the house when I went to check on the kittens/to the loo/to bed only made it worse, to be honest. We did have a lot of candles, so last night we resorted to reading some of Hippie's collection of rare comics

Mostly we need some emergency lights - the hob in the kitchen worked as it's a gas cooker, but we couldn't see enough to cook safely even with all the candles on the worktop.

It's been a crazy few days, but at the minute I'm just glad the washing machine's working again and I finally feel clean!

Gosh Snoof, the rest of us have nothing to moan about after hearing what you've just been through

I'm glad you got through it but sorry to hear about the pain and discomfort you are going through now I can quite believe that you were more worried about Sashimi and the kittens than yourselves....

A halogen torch (rechargable) is always a good thing to have on standby, they give much more light than an ordinary torch...

Re: 31 hours without electricity...

What a nasty experience for you! We lose power a lot in the Summertime: trees down on power lines in thunderstorms, but never more than 3 - 4 hours...you must have been freezing to death!! Could you boil water for hot water bottles to take to bed? Hope you'll be feeling better really soon..((hugs)))...

Re: 31 hours without electricity...

My longest without power was just about 24 hours - but that was in the summer so the only real problem was night time and no appliances/hot water.

Cant stand being cold. Hope you are feeling better now Snoof.
