Donkeys

On the beach this morning, all saddled up and waiting for the children.......

An hour later and the sea mist has come in, the donkeys have been unsaddled.......

That is such a lovely custom having donkeys for the little ones to ride. I've never heard of it here, or seen them at the beaches I've been to: Cape Cod and several in Delaware.....

What a shame the sea mist came in so soon and ended a day by the seaside.....

I always had a donkey ride as a small child in the summer on the beach at Bognor Regis, where I lived. The donkeys used to be over wintered in a field next to the police station and I had to walk past them every day to go to school. I've loved donkeys ever since!

I've never been keen on the seaside donkeys, some look so sad and uncared for. However, these ones look happy and well fed.

We were watching when the lorry arrived on the sands and the donkeys were 'unloaded', Kim. They had 'coats' on which I assume they wore overnight in the fields. The coats were removed and each donkey was brushed and groomed for a good 10mins before the reins and saddle were put on. They also had plenty hay and water.

They are regulary checked to ensure they are well cared for and if anything was amiss, the Council would take their licence away. Pity every donkey in the country wasn't as well looked after.
