Vaccinations - side effects?

Hello!

The time has come again and Oli is now due his second booster. However, within one hour of him having his booster last year he was swollen in the face, particularly the chin area. Within a few hours it had cleared again.

I am seriously debating whether or not to let Oli have another vaccination. What if the swelling got worse?

He is still an indoor cat but does go outside with adult supervision!!

Has anybody else noticed any side effects after cat/s have had vaccinations?

Thanks,

Tanya x

I'd discuss it with your vet.

My two have never had any side effects beyond a bit more laziness for 24 hours. Definately need to discuss this with your vet before the vaccination.

Re: Vaccinations - side effects?

Two of mine regularly had side effects, my Birman in particular became very ill on one ocasion. This is one of the reasons I no longer vaccinate. When they reach around 5 or 6, I personally feel they have all the immunity they need.

Its definately an issue that needs discussing with your vet. Each animal is different and reacts differently just like humans.

Merlin is more tired today after his jabs but the vet told me to expect this. Swelling however is much more serious.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for everyones replies. Unfortunately I did ring my vet as soon as I noticed Oli had swelling in the face. However, the vet assured me that it wasnt the vaccination and that it must be something in my house. As Oli was only led down sleeping when the swelling occured I am completely sure that the swelling was a side effect from the vaccination.

Tanya, you might be interested in this article by a well known US vet (formerly of the UK!) about unnecessary vaccinations.

Re: Vaccinations - side effects?

I stopped getting mine done a couple of years ago cos all my cats in the past hav had tumours and not lived much past 10 mostly. One of them got 'fluey' one year after a vacc as he caught a cold off of next door's cat. I asked myself, 'has his immune system been compromised by years of vaccinations?' I have read a book on it, just don't want to take the risks anymore. Plus the vaccination label says only healthy cats should have vaccinations. In hindsight I wouldn't have got them done past 5 0r 6. BUT it is a personal decision that only YOU can make. I have forgotten what the book is, something like 'vets' and 'doesn't tell you' in the title, prob not allowed to divulge on this site anyway, but wouldn't do any harm to do your own research as it would be your decision.

Re: Vaccinations - side effects?

I think more and more owners are choosing not to vaccinate their cats. Most vets won't tell you this, but most of the vaccs dont need to be done every year. They alos probably won't admit to side effects, after all, vaccinations are their bread and butter. One young vet I saw, agreed with me that vaccinating cat and dogs after a certain age is not worth it. Sadly, I know more than one dog to die from auto immune disease as a result of vaccinations. It is a personal choice, but definitely worth doing some research, but don't exopect your vet to agree with you!
