need some help

How can you teach a kitten to use a scratch post? Ive been trying for 3 weeks but hes just not intrested in using it.

Also do siamese bite alot? When i say bite its like play bite but just dont want him getting into a habit and end up hurting people or will it pass as hes maybe teething?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
K

Re: need some help

Have you tryed a bottle of catnip spray or rubbing some catnip on it ? Place the scratch post near to where the cat sleeps as they tend to like scratching wen they wake up. or where furniture is frequently ruint Make the area around it interesting and fun with toys etc and play with your cat around the post .Reward your cat when he uses it , dont physically try making the cat use it eg lifting his paws ,instead show him by using it yourself a little (lol -but true)

Some people believe siamese do bite more often but all kittens bite its part of learning .Keep your kitten occupied with toys and NEVER use your hands instead hold a toy on a stick for example. If your kitten bites clap and say firmly NO or squeal OUCH If your little boy likes to creep up on you and bite purchase a collar and bell its not so much fun if hes caught in the action and you then clap lol
Also if your cuddling and he bites put him on the floor !

Yes, and especially the bit about crying OUCH! loudly and instantly stopping play. Cats are smart, they catch on quickly.

Re: need some help

we had probs with gettimg harris to use the scratch post when he was a kitten. What we did was put him beside the post and gentle put his paws on it and praised him everytime we did it. I know its been said above not to do this but Harris learned pretty quick and got used to the scratchpost. Whenever he used it himself, he got a reward.

In regards to biting, he used to mouth us when he was getting his belly rubbed when he was in a playful mood and kick his back paws off our hands. but hes grown out of it now.
