Cancer in cats - common?We've just lost our second cat to cancer/tumor at the base of the tongue/throat. The vet says that this is common in cats. A genetic disposition. Is she correct? Both have been male black 'n' whites. The last, 11 years of age.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news - I am afraid I have no knowledge of this particular cancer. You have been very unlucky to have had two pass this way. |

It's not a cancer I'm familiar with; mine has a tumour on her paw - non invasive inasmuch as it won't spread but will continue to return to the same area. After 2 ops the only solution is amputation of paw . . . something we're edging closer too  I'm sorry to hear you've lost 2 of your cats. Is it to the same tumour? Do you think they were exposed to something untoward during their lives or before their birth? Or as the vet said, it could indeed be genetic, sorry but I don't know enough about it to comment with authority. |

I have heard of quite a few cats with cancers in the mouth, so it isn't uncommon. One of my cats had a lymphoma and again they are fairly common. I guess cancers will be on the increase because the chance of cancer increases with age in many cases and cats are living longer, and as in humans I guess some families are predisposed to develop certain types. Sorry for your loss. |

I'm so sorry for your loss; no experience with this, but as has been said, cats are living longer .... that plus a genetic susceptibility ..... ??? |

Thanks everyone for your condolences. Thanks Elaine for the interesting link. Ironically, I posted a message here about our cat not learning that a provocative cat had moved away. Sam still looked out for it even though there was no recent scent. Now I too find myself checking the same door for Sam, but of course he's no longer with us. |
