Wormers

Hello
Looking for yet more info and to pick peoples brains

My friend who breeds, wormed her kittens yesterday with Panacur paste
This morning she got up to find a kitten dead

Bless her,she is so devastated
I dont use Panacur,I use Milbemax

Just wondered what people use,and what ages they started worming kittens

Re: Wormers

Oh dear - well I know that there was trouble with panacur *liquid* years ago (many years ago) & I know of cases where pups were born with problems & it was linked to the panacur - but that was when worming bitches during pregnancy (which they still recommend is done) but I think the ingredients / dosage has been altered.

I use the paste for pups / kittens.

Puppies are done @ 2 weeks (3 day course) & again @ 5 weeks (3 day course) never had a problem. I tend to do the kittens a bit older - but I never worm pregnant animals & never will.

How old was the kitten?
How many graduations did she use?
Is she having a PM done on the kitten?

PS --I was involved in a worming trial / study involving milbemax

Re: Wormers

I always worm my girls before they go to stud

I useed Panacur last year and lost a complete litter of kittens
After speaking to a few breeders who told me they had also had problems with Panacur ,i switched to Milbemax

My vet also advised me not to use Panacur as it is to Harsh on the poor kittys stomachs

I also lost a kitten this morning,i have battled from day one with her
She was born so tiny and never wanted to grow...
Rest in peace little one and Puddin

Re: Wormers

I agree that dogs / cats should be wormed prior to being mated - but I wouldn't worm again till after the babies were born.

Is your friend going to have a PM done?

Re: Wormers

The kitten was Eight weeks old

Not sure what graduation she used.this was his first dose yesterday

Her vet advised her to worm at 8,10 .12 weeks

Yes she is getting the kitten pm.

Smudgley,if you dont mind me asking hpow did the trial go with Milemax

I have had no bother with it,but know other breeders that have

It is so hard,we all just want to do the right thing by our babies
