Jimmy struggling to swallow?I took Jimmy into the vets last night because for the last few days he has been eating ( and keen) but after a few mouthfuls he gags and throws it back up with lots of watery mucus. The only thing he seems to manage is tesco nature turkey and rice, again he is keen to eat and does seem to struggle but manages to keep it down. The vet can't see anything bad in his mouth and his few teeth are OK, no bad smells. The vet gave a steroid injection to see if it would help but there has been no change and the next step will be a sedation to look down his throat. Jimmy is weak and poorly so it is something I'm not keen on but at the same time his only other option is PTS. I will see if he is any better tomorrow but..... I have no idea what I'm going to do, they vet thinks he doesn't have long left but his bloods hadn't changed last month and he seems happy enough. Its such a hard thing to decide, I don't want to PTS, mainly because I love him but if he is bright and happy it seems a shame to give up on him without giving him a chance.

So sorry to hear about Jimmy, if he can only keep down Tesco food you could just keep him on that. I agree it would be a shame to PTS if he's bright and happy. Has he got a thyroid problem farthing ? i ask because i wonder if he has a goitre in his throat but i suppose the vet would have been able to feel that. I wonder if cats can have a feline version of gaviscon or something. |

So sorry to read this about Jimmy, farthing. I suppose you have tried elevating his feeding dish to help him get a better angle for swallowing? It's a very hard call. Kizzy and I will speak to The Great Cat tonight. |

Have had a quick read on the internet about cat vomiting and seveal articles say that sometimes particular foods can cause the cat to vomit. A friend of mine can only feed her persian certain food because she vomits. I do hope everything goes ok for Jimmy. |

Jimmy does have thyroid problems but they are on the low side just now because of his meds and ongoing illness. I hadn't thought about raising his food, thanks for that. He is eating the tesco food, but brought up what he ate this afternoon soon after- I don't think it is really vomit, its more like regurgitation. I'll call the vet tomorrow to find out what we need to do now. He has just pooped, with a little help, which suggests he is getting some food in. I am really worried that I've hurt his throat when giving his meds, I use a pill giver, the vet doesn't think it is likely but its possible. Thank you for all the vibes and chats with the great cat. It is so frustrating, I so wanted to give him a couple of years where he wasn't in and out of the vet and could have a comfortable life. He looks so bright when I go thorugh to see him and toddles into the bathroom for his special extra feeds and I find it very hard to give up on him when he's like this. If he was dull and quiet and didn't want to eat then the descision would be much easier. |
