River Sculpture at Whitcombe Bottom on Harting Down (NT)

This is an interesting installation made by Red Earth

"River: Harting Down OS map ref: SU797174

A 90m greenwood avenue of coppiced ash and hazel, a flowing river of shadow and light. The sculpture is inspired by the ancient deer hunt, prehistoric interventions in the landscape and the flow of glacial meltwater which formed the valley after the last ice age."

Unfortunately, as there was no sunshine today, there were no shadows. Perhaps we will have to revisit when the light is better. I particularly like the picture of our Monty Bogle running down the avenue

Oh dear. Very different; I confess to being a complete troglodyte about this sort of modern sculpture. So, as I can't say something nice, will say nothing.

But thanks for sharing. I may be a "dim viewer", but at least have seen it .....

Think it's better to be there and walk around it and along it ... I felt it had a presence and movement to it. Would have extra with sunlight and shadows. A huge part, for me, is where it is.

Thanks Alex - I think Monty added to the whole experience!

Well I agree with you Angie sometimes it is the place itself and what you find there adds to a feeling that does not always come across in pictures. Where/how are you finding these sculptures??????

OH found this one last time he went up to Harting Down with Monty. He was interested enough to find out what it was on the Internet - it is made in conjunction with the National Trust, so it was easy to track down. There are posters up around the car park at Harting Down, but surprisingly I haven't seen anything about it in local paper nor in the NT magazine - maybe I've just missed it. This particular "happening" incorporates theatre and a choir and other activities which all sound a bit alternative, so doubt we'll be going to that
