Re: First Lambs

Lovely pictures - thanks CM - first lambs of the year, very special.

I only just realised looking at your pictures that their eyes are open. Not having ever seen a newborn lamb "in the flesh", I just supposed their eyes would be closed to start with.

Quite the opposite. They are trying to get up on their feet within 10/15 mins and trying to feed very quickly after that. Really a survival instinct as the mums have to be watchful for fox and crows (also occasionally another broody ewe stealing) really important if they are born outside in early evening and it is twins or triplets.

Re: First Lambs

Thanks for the info CM - I was thinking about it and I suppose all "prey" animals have to be up and able to run as quickly as possible in order to survive.

I feel I can look at sheep and lambs with a completely free conscience as I do not like the taste of lamb or the smell of it cooking, so I don't buy lamb at all. (I still like the mint sauce though!!!)

I love woolly jumpers, but I can wear those without harming the sheep.

Re: First Lambs

Angieh - you do not like the smell or taste of lamb how can anyone not like the smell or taste of lamb .....

I've told you this before on catsey, but a couple of years ago my mate hand reared some orphan lambs to eat They were loved and nurtured and bedded down on bedding thick enough for me & you to sleep comfortably in. They even called out the vet when one had a sore eye. I helped her bottle feed them occasionally and said I didn't know how she could eat them when she'd reared them and loved them so much......anyway at Christmas time, she asks me and some of her other good friends if we wanted a leg of lamb for Christmas ........ well of course I had one & it was absolutely beautiful......... (Well I know I said I couldn't eat them, but how can you not when it's such gorgous well reared meat)

Re: First Lambs

Smudgley, my grandma kept chickens, and I liked them, but had no problems with having stewed chicken! Like Angie, I don't care much for lamb, except shish kebab. I guess there's a distinction somewhere in the mind between pet animals and food animals..or am I just weird?

Re: First Lambs

I don't have any trouble with the thought of eating lamb, it's a good tasty meat and can be locally sourced. I just don't like it!

Mind, I did have a wonderful Italian-type lamb stew once in an hotel - that was lovely and as I didn't cook it, I wasn't affected by the smell. Perhaps it's the smell that puts me off before I ever get to eat it.
