Re: Superstitions

Place a hand over your face when sneezing. Because your soul may escape otherwise.

And when sneezing the devil may enter your body and saying God Bless you" kees him away the devil can be thought to be the older version and then God Bless you during the plague.....as it was like the nursery ryhme..."tissue tissue all fall down"
Sneezing was a sign of the plague.

Re: Superstitions

Oh the magpies - if I see one, I have always said "Good morning (or afternoon) Mr Magpie, how's your wife?" Someone else I know always adds "and children?" - that's meant to divert the bad luck of seeing 1 magpie on its own!

"See a pin and pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck.
See a pin and let it lay and you'll have bad luck all the day."

Gosh - you've got me at it now!

Planting a rosemary bush by your door keeps the devil away. (I planted mine a little while ago!)

Re: Superstitions

Oh yes, the horseshoe, but must be hung so it points up, not down, or the good luck will drain out!

Knocking on wood to avoid bad consequences if you've said something boastful or that you don't want to happen .....

I just salute, I had a pal who had a full bloomin' rhyme for him, "Good morning Mr magpie, how's you wife and daughters"....and it went on more than that, I can't remember the rest!
