"See a penny, pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck!" Done that one since I was a little child; I always pick up a penny! And throwing salt over your left shoulder to cancel the bad luck you just caused by spilling it...... Break a mirror: seven years bad luck .... |

New purses should never be given without putting a coin in them....an obvious reasoning behind that I imagine. You should never cross on the stairs...ie one going up one going down....not sure why? If you drop a knife you should step on the handle before you pick it up.....something I think to do with swords....not sure what. If you spill salt you have to throw some over your shoulder into the face of the devil. |

Never open an umbrella indoors; everyone will have bad luck ..... Cute story about this. I had Chinese friends; when I was visiting one day Sam started to show me the new umbrella he'd just gotten a bargain on, when I said don't open that indoors!!! Asked why, I explained it was just bad luck. Silence. Then he said, Is that an American superstition?, I said well, yes, I suppose it's silly but it is. He thanked me very seriously and said he would never do it again....!! It seems that like most cultures the Chinese are superstitious to a degree, and Sam thought well, when in Rome ,,,, |

Can't believe no one has said black cats yet! Walking under ladders... Saluting Magpies, now, I ALWAYS do that, if you see one single Magpie on it's own you are supposed to salute it, I think this is because Magpies mate for life and you often see them in pairs or groups, so a solitary one often means it's mate has died, although it could mean it's just getting some peace seeing as they are stuck together for life! But if you see a single Magpie and don't salute it then you are supposed to get bad luck. I had a book of worldwide superstitions somewhere, will look it out if I still have it. |
